Welcome to the team Ali!

We’re delighted to shine the spotlight on Ali in this edition of our Meet the Team blog. A familiar face to many of our long-standing customers, Ali’s journey with Good Taste began right at the very start, volunteering in the shop when it first opened. Her commitment never wavered — even a move away from Sheffield didn’t stop her championing Fair Trade, hosting her own annual Fairtrade day to share products with friends and community.
Now back in Sheffield and part of the team one day a week, Ali brings with her years of passion, experience and unwavering belief in the power of Fair Trade. From her love of beautifully made Pachamama knitwear to her heart for community and ethical living, Ali truly embodies what Good Taste is all about. We hope you enjoy getting to know her a little better!
How did you get involved with working at Good Taste?

I volunteered in the shop when it first opened (with Nina years ago) and have supported it since. Even moving to Doncaster didn’t stop my involvement as Jenny would bring stock over each November/December for a ‘Fairtrade day’ in my home.  Returning to Sheffield in August saw Jenny offer a day a week job – perfect!

Why do you think fair trade is important?

Fair trade ensures workers receive a fair price for their labours, as well as safe places to work in. In a world where many of us are looking for the cheapest option with no thought about how that is achieved, it’s great to know that Good Taste is seeking to support and encourage equity and give workers a say in their lives.

What is your favourite fair trade product?

I love the Pachamama knitwear: gloves, hats, coasters and Ziggy sheep! They are made in Nepal and the company makes frequent visits to Nepal to ensure their ethical policies are adhered to. Workers are paid above national average, treated equally and with respect, regardless of gender, race or religion. Employment is freely chosen with no forced, bonded or child labour. I have two pairs of fingerless gloves, and have bought sets for my husband, mum, sister, friend….as well as sheep (maybe nearer a flock) and coasters.

What do you do when you are not working at the shop?

I enjoy walking my dog and drinking good coffee(may involve cake too). I love being part of a local church and doing life with friends there. I’m soon to become a Granny, so expect life may become a little busier.

What do you like most about living in Sheffield?

Sheffield allows me to do those things I mentioned above. There are so many places to walk – lots from my own doorstep – and many coffee shops to explore. Sheffield has the perfect mix of town and country. I love it!
